Career Choices:
Education vs. Entertainment

ABSTRACT

Older folk often ask young people what they want to be when they grow up. Increasingly more and more young African American males are replying that they want to play ball or rap. It is understandable why young males are attracted to these occupations. However what many of these young males don’t realize is just how hard it is to secure a job in the entertainment profession. Approximately three in 10,000, or approximately 0.03 percent of high school senior boys playing interscholastic basketball will eventually be drafted by an NBA team. Approximately eight in 10,000, or approximately 0.08 percent of high school senior boys playing interscholastic football will eventually be drafted by an NFL team. The chances of earning a living as a rapper are even worst. And don’t even mention career chances for black males in TV and film. So what about education, or shall I say college, as a career choice? My presentation will show that education is a much better career choice for African American males than entertainment.
