ABSTRACT

The solution to the complex problem of equality for free African-Americans ran parallel courses during the American Revolution. One course advocated the assimilation of free blacks into American society while the other advocated the return of free blacks to the land of their fathers. The result of the efforts of those advocating the return to their land of origin was the establishment of the first black republic in 1847. This country is now known as the Republic of Liberia.

By 1960 the Republic of Liberia had gone through many struggles to take its place as a leading nation in the fight for independence of other African countries still under the system of colonization.

In 1980 Liberia fell from grace and plunged into 25 years of civil unrest, military dictatorships, and a civil war. This trend has been fuel by hatred, greed, un-forgiveness and a decline in moral values.

Liberia faces an election in October of 2005. The results will determine whether its takes the road to freedom and prosperity it enjoyed in the past or continue in the path of destruction. There is an urgent need for healing, reconciliation and revival. The harvest is plentiful but the laborers are few.
